Lady Bug Appetizers
(makes 3 dozen)
- 2 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 2 tablespoons sour cream Black paste food coloring
- 1/2 teaspoon minced chives
- 1 minced garlic clove
- 1/8 teaspoon minced fresh parsley
- 36 wheat crackers
- 18 cherry tomatoes, quartered
- 18 large pitted ripe olives
- 72 fresh chive pieces (about 1-1/2 inches long)
In a small bowl, beat cream cheese and sour cream until smooth. Remove 1 tablespoon to a small bowl and tint black. Place tinted cream cheese mixture in a small plastic bag; set aside.
Add the chives, garlic salt and parsley to the remaining cream cheese mixture. Spread over crackers. Arrange two tomato quarters on each for the ladybug wings.
For heads, halve the olives widthwise; place one half on each cracker. Insert two chives into olives for antennae. Use tinted cream cheese mixture to pipe spots onto wings.
Ladybug Strawberry Cream Cheese Tea Sandwiches
Please note the following supplies list makes 1 sandwich. You will need to adjust ingredients as necessary for your guest list.
- 2 pieces of white bread
- 2 oz. cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 tsp sugar
- Wilton’s Red Food Color gel
- Strawberry Jam
- Black string licorice
- 6 Chocolate chips
- 1 Tootsie roll
- 1 Strawberry
- Round cookie cutter
Add a small amount of red gel with toothpick to color a small amount of cream cheese. Add sugar and mix. Cut both pieces of bread using a round cookie cutter. Spread one side with the cream cheese mixture and one side with strawberry jam. Cut the pink cream cheese bread into half. Place it on top of the bread with the jam. Place 3 of the chocolate chips on each top, upside down to create the ladybug’s dots. Cut a small slice of strawberry in half and place on the top portion of the ladybug as its head.
Slice up the Tootsie Roll Candy in half. Take each half and slice it again in the middle. Place 2 of the Tootsie Rolls pieces in the microwave and microwave for about 15 seconds on Defrost setting. Take the pieces out of the microwave and roll in between your hands to form the 2 antennae for the lady bug sandwich.
If you will not be serving ladybug sandwiches right away be sure to cover with plastic wrap to prevent the cream cheese from drying out. These sandwiches look adorable when served on a tray garnished with kale greens and some edible flowers.
Dirt Cake Recipe
- 1 bag chocolate sandwich cookies
- 1 package cream cheese (8 oz.)
- ½ stick of butter or margarine
- 2 cups milk
- 2 large boxes vanilla instant pudding
- 1 container non-dairy whipped topping (8 oz.)
- 8 inch flower pot or plastic bucket
- 3 artificial flowers or 3 gerbera daisies with stems stuffed inside 3 drinking straws for stability
Crush the cookies in a blender or food processor and set aside. Cream together the butter and cream cheese. In large bowl, mix the vanilla pudding and milk. Add cream cheese mixture and the non-dairy whipped topping. Beat together until thoroughly mixed. Line the flower pot with foil. In the flower pot (or bucket), layer the cookie mixture, then the pudding mixture, then the cookie mixture, ending with the cookie mixture (to resemble dirt). Add the flowers to the top.
Games in the Backyard are Fun Fun Fun!
Kids of all ages love bubbles and it’s a great activity to assign an older sibling or guest to entertain the younger kids while the adult crowd socializes. The Melissa and Doug Bollie Ladybug Bubbles Activity Set
is a perfect item to tie into your garden party fancy ladybug party theme.
Another fun activity to play is “Pin a Spot on the Ladybug.” Create a ladybug shape by cutting a circle with a large piece of red poster board. Draw a black line down the middle and attach a small half circle of black poster board paper at the top to make the ladybug’s head. Cut several circles from black construction paper for the ladybug’s “dots.” Follow the same rules as Pin the Tail on the Donkey.
Party Favors to Suit Your Guest’s Fancy!
Every guest loves taking home a treat and we suggest purchasing some inexpensive bug catchers from an online retailer to fill with sweet and fancy treats to eat. A fun option for an adult only party favor (due to its small size and choking hazard) might be Love Bug Ladybug Magnets
which also come with a custom option with enough lead time on the order.
